The Passion of St Tibulus

Ah, 'The Passion of St Tibulus'. This is my favourite one of the lot. It's the one when for me you can best see the authors' tool marks. Fathers Crilly, McGuire and Hackett are hosting a Cuban Priest, Fr Hernandez. It is a dark, damp evening outside, but all bar Jack are playing Cluedo. It is Fr Hernandez's last night with them before he leaves.

As they play - with some typical interjections from Dougal, talk is of Bishop Brennan - Ted, Dougal and Jack's 'sort of boss'. Rumour has it that he has a child, in California. As it his last night, Fr Hernandez distributes gifts - including a video recorder. The following day, Bishop Brennan comes with an assignment for Ted, Dougal and Jack. They are to protest at the showing on Craggy Island of a Film that has been banned by the Pope - The Passion of St Tibulus. On attempting to leave, Bishop Brennan can't find his travel bag - he has been recalled from holiday to come and deal with the matter of this film. He asks Jack, who has not gone out protesting with the other two. He says that he doesn't know where the bag is. Of course he does and when the Bishop leaves he pulls it out to examine its contents. A bottle of whiskey aside, the bag contains a video tape - 'Holiday 95 California'.

Meanwhile, protesting the film has actually made it even more popular, so the Bishop Brennan returns to distribute some new parishes for the boys. These are even worse, if that can be the case, than Craggy Island. After he leaves again they sit, in the slough of despond, until Jack pulls out Bishop Brennan's video tape, which they watch over and over on Fr Hernandez's recent gift...
