For some strange reason, given that the Slough branch of Wernham Hogg, a paper merchants, is facing the threat of redundancies, branch manager David Brent has decided that he needs a new secretary. There are two candidates for the post, but which one will he choose?

The final episode of the first series starts with a meeting in the office of David Brent, manager of the Slough branch of paper merchant Wernham Hogg. In the presence of sycophant Gareth Keenan, Brent is telling warehouse worker and non-fork-lift-truck-driving fork lift truck driver Alex that he is being made redundant. What follows is high farce in the best traditions of British Comedy.
